How to Adjust the Electric Eye (Safety Sensors)

When to do this:

If the door fails to close, reverses immediately after closing, or the indicator lights on the sensors are off, flickering, or flashing.

STEPS

  1. Loosen the nut on the sensor mounting brackets on both sides of the garage door.

  2. Adjust sensors until the LED on the sensors stay solid. This can take some trial-and-error. One method is to tie a string between the two sensors. Adjust the sensors up or down until the string is level and both sensors are aligned with each other.

  3. Tighten the nuts on the brackets to hold the sensors securely in place.

  4. Verify the sensors are connected by confirming the small LED lights on each one are solid (not blinking).

  5. Check that the door opens and closes properly.

  6. Verify the safety still works. As the door is closing, carefully put something in front of the safety eye, interrupting the signal. The door should stop and reverse. If the door continues downward, the safety is not working properly and a qualified technician is needed to further diagnose.

Tip: If the LED lights won’t stay on solid, recheck the alignment or gently wipe the sensor lenses clean with a soft cloth.
