ABC Door Company began business in 1973 as a Corporation with Dave & Virginia Schafer and Frank & Carolyn Ann Beller as shareholders, and their teenage sons as employees. The primary product at the time was interior closet doors. During the 70’s other product lines were added, including aluminum windows, wood windows, bathroom accessories, accordion doors, kitchen cabinets, and garage doors. It was during this time that ABC Door started their relationship with Raynor Garage Door.
In 1980 David & Virginia Schafer became the sole stockholders. Virginia provided management and leadership for the growing company in the 80s and early 90s. During this time a re-evaluation of the business caused the elimination of most of the product lines to focus on what we do best, garage doors and rolling steel doors. Because of the continued growth and performance of the Company as a market leader, Raynor asked us to open a second location in 1992. A Farmington branch of ABC Door was the result of that effort.
Virginia Schafer retired from active management in the company at the beginning of 1995, leaving behind a successful and thriving business of which we are all proud. It was at this time that Tom Schafer took over the day-to-day management. We continued our market leadership, focusing our efforts on providing superior products and superior customer service. The summer of 1998 saw the opening of our third location in Santa Fe.
The Santa Fe and Farmington offices have closed (2009 and 2020, respectively) due to changing economies in those areas. We still service the entire state and even into the bordering states of Colorado, Utah, and Arizona.
Our primary product line continues to be garage doors and rolling steel doors. However, dock equipment, movable walls, automatic gates, hollow-metal doors, and specialty doors have proven to be complementary products.
Kyle & Nathan Schafer, sons of Tom, are the third generation and current owners as of October 2025.

Meet Our Leadership
Kyle Schafer
Sales Manager, Commercial Estimator, Co- Owner
Kyle grew up around garage doors with his dad, and worked at ABC Door through high school. Kyle met Martha Mae while out of state for college, and married her in 2009. They now have three boisterous boys, and one just-as joyful girl.
Kyle returned to New Mexico in 2018 to take on the commercial estimating role at ABC Door. He enjoys learning about the numerous projects happening around the state, and developing ongoing relationships with contractors, architects, and owners. He has also taken on the role of sales manager, and relishes learning something new every day.
When not at work Kyle is heavily involved at his local church, coaching soccer, playing ultimate frisbee, and attempting to complete fine furniture projects at home.
Nathan Schafer
President, General Manager, and Co-Owner
Growing up in the East Mountains, Nathan worked in the family business as a technician during high school. He attended college at Trinidad State Junior College and received an AAS in Gunsmithing. That career took him to Minnesota where he worked as a gunsmith for 11 years.
Nathan returned to New Mexico to rejoin ABC Door. In 2024 he and his brother Kyle began the succession process to take over ownership of the business from their father, Tom.
Married to his high-school sweetheart Whitney since 2009, they have 3 wonderful children. The whole family is very involved in their church, doing work projects and leading in the youth program. They all love the outdoors and traveling around our beautiful country.
